About this image
The Painted Hills, found in Wheeler County, Oregon, is one of the three sections of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, showcasing unique geologic formations.
The Painted Hills are named for their beautifully colored layers, with shades of yellows, golds, blacks, and reds. The tones and hues can appear different each time you visit due to the changing light and moisture levels affecting the claystones. Once you witness them firsthand, it becomes clear why the Painted Hills are considered one of Oregon's 7 Wonders.
